So run in short sharp bursts between cover, like you're acting sneaky.įifthly: the game is auto-compensating for your useless old ass already :D If you fail a few times in a row. You can run for 2 whole seconds before you emanate any noise, and the noise rapidly gets loud and can attract creatures that can't see you round corners. Or to put it simply, if you can't see them, they can't see you.įourthly: you can run around a lot without being heard. The critical thing is, if you can see a monster at a range between you and the top of the screen when you're centred, that's the distance at which they can see you. ![]() ![]() Flick the torch on and see how the camera zooms. ![]() Keep the torch mostly off, flick it on to scan for a few seconds from behind a wall - make sure you can't be seen! If you hover the mouse over the player avatar, the screen shrinks to the point that the top and bottom of the visible play area also shows you at what distance the monsters can see you. Playing Basingstoke like a run-and-gun is fun but usually leads to panic, running out of ammunition, and a short sharp experience as a snack for something. If you just KO a monster, or distract it, it stays where it is, and you can get past it, and it won't bother you again unless you have to backtrack. In practice this means that they will gradually all start to respawn somewhere near the exit as it's the last place you see. instead they will respawn somewhere on the level that you have not seen yet. The real problem with killing monsters though is that they do not go away. Ultra Brew makes you uncannily strong and increases damage effects too. However if a monster is subject to any status effects or you hit it from behind, your damage level is increased by 1 point which might bump up the effect. It's dangerous, often noisy, and sometimes ineffective (monsters don't have hitpoints either - the effect of a weapon on a monster is always the same - either none, stun, kill, or gib). Secondly: killing monsters is not encouraged. And finally, do some last minute crafting before you exit the level - you can only take a few things with you, so if you've got a bunch of stuff you can craft into a single thing, then that's worth doing. In addition: make sure you find the suitcase on every level, so you can take more stuff with you when you leave the campsite. Then when you start the next level you're more likely to start out with better stuff (and more money and ammunition). This goes for items, money, and ammunition. If you arrive at the campsite with more stuff than is already there, the campsite is permanently boosted. They're randomly generated, and you'll get a different loadout of loot on the level. to start with more stuff: replay a level. The answer is approximately 10 cents per copy :(īelieve it or not I think Basingstoke shipped without any cheats in it! So we're probably back to "git gud", but there might be some way to mitigate things as it's sometimes not obvious how to avoid being dead, and there are lots of subtle little things in Basingstoke that if you discover how they work can keep you alive longer. I'd also have gotten my Mrs and mates to buy copies. If it were multiplayer co-op I wouldn't care how hard it was (I'm on GTFO right now) as there's fun making it with mates. I assume a difficulty modifier or extra lives per map (which would be nice come on! I've bought insurance policies and died every single time before using it at a "good" spot because they are one use and thats all the money I have) would require coding and so isn't happening, which makes me feel sorry for the devs.Īny suggestions? Get good won't work I'm old and grew up with PC games with quicksave (or cheats) I never took rogue very seriously as a kid though I played it in it's ascii glory. Otherwise is there anyway to give an old man a helping hand? Is there a save game editor so I can start with more stuff? Are there any built in cheats (in the old days EVERY game had cheats -( I see there is a cheat engine "support" but I'm concerned of running that incase steam has issues with it. ![]() I don't care about achievements, and I don't care if I'm cheating myself by making it a bit easier I'm just after a bit of fun. it's just I've got to level 5 and I'm finding myself dying over and over and it's getting frustrating. but I love the graphics, the style and running around like a headless chicken. The easy answer is this game isn't for me. Got it on humble bundle so I hate to think how little the devs got -(
